Electro house is a genre of house style which is characterised by a heavy bass and a tempo of 125 to 135 beats per minute. Its origin was influenced by tech house and electro. Electro house is distinguished by the use of drum machines, the use of analogue bass (sawtooth bass) and high-pitched lead synthesizers. Electro house sometimes resembles tech house, but it can contain melodic elements, as well as samples and synthesizers.
The emergence of electro house was facilitated by the emergence of electronic music as electroclash in the late 1990s. One of the first musicians working in the style of electro house was the German duo Sono, the French Mr. Oizo, and the Italian Benny Benassi. It was Benassi who developed the “side-chain” bass crunching technique in 2002, which became one of the genre’s fads. Royal Gigolos, Global Deejays and Combi-Nation also developed different DJ techniques.
Thanks to Benny Benassi, electro house has become one of the most popular varieties of electronic dance music. His track ‘Satisfaction’ dominated charts around the world and was played by DJs such as Soulwax, Erol Alkan, Tiga and Larry Tee. Today it is considered a patent of the genre.
